DESCRIPTION:Come for food & drinks\, screenings\, conversations\, and more\
	, to\nsupport Portuguese housing protesters.\n\nAfter years of austerity a
nd neoliberal policies that increased social\ninequality\, raised housing
prices without wage proportionality and motivated\nfinancial speculation -
the housing crisis is a phenomenon common to all Europe.\n\nPortugal\, a
country in the peripheries of Europe\, is facing a particular severe\nhous
ing crisis with prices raising 90% since 2019. In cities like Lisbon and\n
Porto – that face severe touristification and real state speculation – the
\naverage rent for a two-bedroom house is 1500€\, while the minimum wage i
s 900€\nand the average net salary is 1200€. Since the new right-wing gove
rnment\,\nsupported by the far-right party Chega\, has taken office\, the
prices have risen\n17% every year\, 3x the European average. Recently\, th
e PM Luís Montenegro and\nhis government have proposed a new bill (“Lei do
Arrendamento”) that would give\nmore leverage for landlords to raise pric
es and facilitate evictions.\n\nFacing this context\, and inspired by the
Spanish housing protesters and the\n“Acampada na Puerta del Sol”\, Portugu
ese protesters\, of all ages and\nbackgrounds\, have been occupying the pu
blic space since October\, in Porto (Praça\nD. João I) and Lisbon (Praça d
o Rossio). Key demands include the withdrawal of\nthe proposal—put forward
by the Government and the far-right party—to amend rent\nlaws\; the estab
lishment of rent caps\; an end to evictions of people who have no\nalterna
tive housing\; measures to curb the acquisition of homes by real estate\ni
nvestment funds\; and increased investment in public housing.\n\nIn recent
weeks\, the encampments have been met with police brutality using\nphysic
	al violence\, dogs\, baton charges\, pepper spray\, tasers\, and rubber\nb
ullets. Hundreds of people have been injured\, arrested\, and tortured in
police\ncustody. In all police charges\, the encampments' infrastructure i
s either\nconfiscated or destroyed. Both the “Acampadas” are in dire need
of help to keep\nlegal protection for charged citizens\, to maintain a sou
nd media structure\, to\nkeep feeding hundreds of people every day\, to ha
ve basic medical care available\,\nand so many other needs born out of wee
ks and weeks of struggle and organizing.\n\nAlthough the “Acampadas” face
State repression\, they have been largely supported\nby the Portuguese pub
lic\, which is also shifting the social and neoliberal media\nclaims that
had colonized the mass media. The “Acampadas” are creating a\nhistorical m
oment where “poder popular” (people’s power) is showing that people\nhave
had enough of this right-wing and far-right politics and are taking their\
ndestinies in their own hands.\nIn the spirit of transnational solidarity\
, we urge you to participate in this\nbenefit for the Portuguese “Acampada
s”\, so that they can keep on going with\ntheir struggle and eventually ha
	ve their demands met!
