DESCRIPTION:This event is a personal and cinematic exploration of Syria bey
ond headlines and\nstatistics.\nWhile numbers are often used to describe t
he Syrian conflict\, they rarely\ncapture its emotional reality. Behind th
ese figures lies something much harder\nto express: what loss feels like.
This is where art becomes essential.\n\nDuring this evening\, introduced a
nd guided by Tala & Jula van Dokhuis\, we will\nwatch three short films by
Syrian filmmaker Houssam Hamo together. They will\nguide you through the
program and open the space for conversation\, and\nreflection.\nThe films
will explore different layers of loss\, memory\, and identity:\n\nVoid fol
lows a young woman caught in a vicious cycle of denial after the loss of\n
someone close to her. Through music and silence\, the film expresses a sen
se of\nemotional emptiness.\n\nHibernate tells the story of a young boy wh
o dreams of making music in an\nenvironment where dreams feel distant.\n\n
Weaning portrays a mother confronting the departure of her son. At the sam
e\ntime\, the film explores questions of identity\, inspired by an ancient
myth and\nreimagined within a Syrian context.\n\nProgramme:\nWalk in with
	 a drink: 18:00 – 18:30\nScreening of the short films 18:30 – 19:30\nA sho
	rt break 19:30 – 19:45\nA live Q&A with the director 19:45 – 20:15\nSyrian
dinner 20:15 – 21:00\n\nAlthough the films touch upon heavy themes\, the
evening is not intended to leave\nyou feeling sad. On the contrary\, watch
ing\, listening\, and discussing together\ncan open up space for reflectio
n\, understanding\, and connection—exactly what we\nlike to do at Dokhuis.
\n\nAbout the Director\n\nHoussam Hamo is a Syrian filmmaker and composer
from Aleppo. With a background\nin architecture\, he transitioned into fil
mmaking and music.\n\nHis work combines sound\, image\, and memory\, explo
ring themes such as loss and\nidentity. His films have been screened inter
nationally and have received\nmultiple awards.\n\nThis event is free to at
tend\, however with a donation ticket you support Dokhuis\nto keep events
and workshops free in the future.
